Social and Emotional Development (SED)

Self-perception, wellbeing, social relationships and coping skills.

Why it matters

A student’s academic picture rarely stands apart from their social and emotional one. A student who withdraws from peer relationships, who does not believe they can succeed, or who has no one to turn to under stress, will show it in their schoolwork long before anyone names the cause.

These states are hard to see from the outside, and they are precisely the ones a student is least likely to volunteer. Structured measurement gives the guidance service a way to ask that does not depend on the student happening to speak up.

When to use it

Alongside a start-of-term screening, when a teacher notices a change in a student’s behaviour or engagement, and as follow-up after a support plan has been in place for a term.

What it distinguishes

Low self-esteem from low self-efficacy; loneliness from a thin support network; general wellbeing from momentary distress. These are different problems and they need different responses.

Limits

Self-report instruments measure what the student is willing and able to report. They are read together with teacher observation and, where relevant, family input - never alone.

Scope note

This structure is designed to support assessment, screening and guidance processes — not to make a clinical diagnosis. The aim is not to diagnose but to know the student more accurately, follow their development and identify the support they need in time.
