3x3 Completion (TI-IIA)

Visual pattern and problem solving

ASA — Academic Skills and Attention 12–18 min School counsellor

3x3 Completion (TI-IIA) assesses visual pattern and problem solving. A 3x3 matrix is presented with one cell missing. Completing it requires tracking the rule that runs across the rows and the one that runs down the columns at the same time.

What it makes visible

  • Loads working memory as well as reasoning, because two rules must be held together.
  • A student who does well on 2x2 Analogy but poorly here is usually struggling with holding, not with reasoning.
  • Useful before deciding whether a support plan should reduce cognitive load or teach strategy.

Scope and limits

This is a screening and assessment instrument; it does not make a clinical diagnosis. The exact scope of use must be verified against the relevant instrument form, its norm group and the conditions of administration.

Frequently asked questions

Because two rules operate at once. The additional difficulty is in holding both while searching, which is why the two forms are read together rather than separately.

Scope note

This structure is designed to support assessment, screening and guidance processes — not to make a clinical diagnosis. The aim is not to diagnose but to know the student more accurately, follow their development and identify the support they need in time.
